Celebrating diversity on Queen Elizabeth

In a beautiful display of cultural diversity and inclusivity, the Indonesian crew onboard Queen Elizabeth came together on 28 February to celebrate Galungan, a significant festival in the Indonesian culture, which commemorates the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, or good over evil.

As the festivities unfolded, the crew areas were adorned with vibrant decorations, evoking the spirit of Galungan. Indonesian crew members dressed in traditional attire, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the celebration. The aroma of mouth-watering Indonesian dishes filled the air, tantalizing the taste buds of everyone on board. Adding to the merriment, the Seafarers Welfare Committee (SWC) also provided soft drinks for everyone throughout the celebration.Amidst the joyous atmosphere, the Indonesian crew gathered for prayers, expressing gratitude and seeking blessings for their families and loved ones back home. It was a touching moment that highlighted the importance of staying connected to one’s roots, even when thousands of miles away from home.

Welfare Officer, Carolina Valencia, and the F&B Department played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the celebration by providing logistical support and the traditional dishes. Their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion among the crew was evident throughout the event.

Carolina said:

“What truly made the celebration special was the participation of crew members from diverse cultural backgrounds. Crew members from various nationalities joined in the celebration, eager to learn about Indonesian traditions. It was a beautiful exchange of cultures, showcasing the essence of unity in diversity that defines the Cunard experience”.

I Nyoman Tata – Hotel Assistant, Restaurant said:

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us in organising the Galungan event. We all were extremely happy because we could share dinner and drinks together. Even though we are far from home, because of this event we felt the ship is like our home, a place where we can pray with our Balinese family and enjoy the night together after ceremony. I am proud to say We Are Cunard! Thank you Carolina for your hard work and support, we had an amazing time’’.

As the evening drew to a close, laughter and camaraderie filled the room as crew members shared stories and bonded over shared experiences. The Galungan celebration onboard the Queen Elizabeth served as a shining example of how embracing different cultures enriches our lives and strengthens the fabric of our community.

In the heart of the ocean, amidst the vast expanse of the sea, the Indonesian crew and their fellow shipmates came together as one family, united in celebration and solidarity. It was a moment to cherish – a testament to the inclusive spirit that defines Cunard and sets it apart as a beacon of cultural harmony and diversity.
