Andrea Mendoza, Deputy Production Technician Sound

Andrea has been working on Cunard ships since 2019. She’s recently been promoted to Assistant Manager Production Sound.

What’s a typical day like for you?

“Depending on whether it’s a sea day/port day and on the scheduled entertainment, I might start with the morning lectures in the theatre. On that same day I might get assigned to set up other venues but most days I will assist on rehearsal, and both shows in the theatre. Late at night, we all take part in resetting the stage for the next day’s show. We usually have multiple breaks in between activities to have a rest or do some leisure activities like going to the gym.”

Why did you choose a production career at sea?

“I wanted to gather more experience in the entertainment industry and cruise ships seemed like an interesting way to start, specially as you get to travel the world.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“Working with talented people; not only musicians, cast member and guest entertainers, but also with our production team. And of course, I love getting to be part on the making of a great show.”

What has the career progression been like for you with Cunard?

“I started as a stage crew on my first contract. While doing so, I became interested in sound and began by shadowing Jim, our AMP Sound, – he has been my mentor on the process until this day. During the Pandemic I took the time to enrol onto online courses on Fundamentals of Sound and applied for the deputy role which i was fortunate enough to get! And now after a few contracts as a deputy I’ve been officially just promoted to the role of Assistant Manager Production Sound. I’m looking forward to this next stage.”

What has been the highlight of your career at sea so far?

“I would say when I had to quickly jump into covering the role of AMP Sound when Jim was ill. It was like taking a plunge into the water with sharks, but it has been the greatest highlight as I learned a lot from that experience! After that I also started covering Jim during his leave periods and that has fast tracked my career. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of mixing for any celebrity on board yet!”

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting a career at sea?

You will work hard, specially if you choose entertainment, but everything is worth it if you have the passion. I would also advise on having a teamwork mindset as this will make the ride more enjoyable as you get to work with many talented people from many nationalities.”

What has been your favourite production on board?

“During the 2023 World Voyage I got to work with a guest production company with four vocalists on a show called “100 Years of Musicals”. I love musical theatre so that is by far my favourite I’ve done.”

What is your favourite port to visit?

“Lisbon is absolutely my favourite port to visit. It’s got everything I could ever ask for. I always find something new to do and explore every time I’m there. And overnights in Lisbon are the best!”
