Charlie Ailes-Barfield, Deck Cadet

Charlie is a Deck Cadet with Carnival UK, and has known a career at sea was for her ever since she visited a ship’s bridge as a child.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a cadet?

“Growing up I spent a lot of time on the beaches, doing volunteer lifeguard work. Once I finished my A levels I took a gap year working for the RNLI. Which set me up really nicely for starting my cadetship the following September.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the maritime industry?

From a young age my parents took me on ships on holiday and one day I went on a bridge tour and that was it I was hooked. I wanted to drive it!

What is the most memorable experience so far during your cadetship?

For me there’s two. One was when I was on board QM2 and I got to do the hand steering up the Hudson to New York at sunrise. It was amazing.

The second was when we held a remembrance ceremony for the Battle of the Atlantic and I got to meet WW2 veterans and help them lay a wreath. It’s something I’ll never forget.

Do you get to explore the ports much? Which has been your favourite port?

As long as I’m not working I’ve been able to get off in port. They are so great with being flexible and letting me go explore. My favourite so far has been New York; we had such a great day ashore and I think we went everywhere and saw so much, but I can wait for Australia and Vietnam soon.

What advice would you to give to someone considering becoming a cadet?

Just do it! It’s so incredible and no two days are the same. I’ve learnt so much and I cant wait to learn more as I continue with this career. The people you meet and experiences you have make all the time away so so worth it. “
